Iowa's official system for measuring Iowa's Nutrient Reduction Strategy progress is the result of an INREC collaboration with agronomy retailers, Certified Crop Advisors (CCA), and the Iowa State University Science Assessment Team. The Progress Measurement Assessment system utilizes a pioneering, first-of-its-kind system using retailer and CCA farm records to track and demonstrate environmental progress being made by Iowa farmers. This system was developed over a two year period and deployed in full in 2018 to gather data beginning with the 2017 crop year.

This effort provides the means for tracking and demonstrating the adoption of nutrient loss reduction practices listed in the Iowa Nutrient Strategy using aggregated information on the nutrient load reductions resulting from farmer activities. This type of near-term progress demonstration is critical to the continued success of Iowa’s Nutrient Strategy. This system was designed to ensure that it’s easy to use, protects the confidentiality of information, is statistically valid, and provides credible and accurate information.
