Rotational and Flex Grazing Field Day
Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with Whiterock Conservancy, will host a rotational and flex grazing field day on Thursday, September 14th. The 4:00-6:00 p.m. field day will begin at the Oak Ridge Campground, rural Coon Rapids. The field day is free and open to the public and includes a complimentary meal.
Whiterock Conservancy is a non-profit land trust of 5,500 acres located along the Middle Raccoon River. Darwin Pierce, Farm Manager, and Rob Davis, Conservation Lands Manager work together to fulfill the Conservancy’s mission to actively manage conservation land, to demonstrate sustainable farming practices and to keep the land open to the public. The Conservancy has 2,600 acres of CRP, natural and constructed wetlands, restored oak savannahs, and even several colonies of bees. They also oversees conservation grazing efforts with five different tenants on the trust’s land.
Speakers at the field day include Rob Davis, Darwin Pierce and Pat Corey, tenant grazier and Natural Resources Conservation Service grassland specialist. Together they will provide an overview of the Conservancy’s pasture system, discuss the pasture’s response to rotational and flex grazing, share preliminary analysis results of forage data and offer insight into economic drivers of rotational and flex grazing systems on leased land.
The field day will begin at Oak Ridge Campground, 1546 125th Street, Coon Rapids. From Coon Rapids, head east on IA-141E for 2.2 miles. Turn right onto Fig Ave/N56 for 1.5 miles. Turn left to head east on 125th St for 0.3 miles. Site is located on the south side of the road. Rain location will be the River House, 1314 Fig Avenue, Coon Rapids.
The workshop is free and open to the public, but reservations are suggested to ensure adequate space and food. Contact Liz Juchems at 515-294-5429 or email email@example.com.
